I'm a total sucker for light commercial vehicles, the Mercedes-Benz Vario makes me consider upgrading my licence so I can own and drive one.
The current lineup of light commercials, [Citan, Vito, Spinter].
They were missing a trick with the Citan, as it's an extremely popular size for light commercial vehicles in Europe. They released the Citan last year, could have done better than badge engineering a Renault Kangoo.
Unimog, all business.

Why do I find the Vario so cool? It's just a van, yet there's something about it that makes my want-meter go off the charts.

I'm glad someone else thinks so too...
I like it partly because they havn't changed it since it came out in '96. Insanely reliable and durable, it's big and it's pretty much in a class of it's own as a van. Also 4x4 option.
My driving licence only allows up to 3.5T (Maximum Auth Mass), the Vario's are available from 6.5-8.5T as far as I know. The only real alternative is a 4x4 Iveco Daily, which is available in 3.5T but only available in a chassis-cab I think.

Hmm. So it's not just me...
